“Balompié” is an old fashioned, and now out of use, word the Spanish had to describe the country’s most popular sport: football. Nikolaos Vlachos travels extensively through the Iberian Peninsula during the 2015-2016 season to discover why the Spaniards have dominated the sport in recent years. On his journey he visits all of the country’s professional league grounds, and records the stories of the teams competing in Spain’s top two divisions.
Furthermore, he unravels the country’s complex history which has its impact on the modern game. In the end, Vlachos compiles a football fans’ travel guide to Spanish football – seen from the eyes of a qualified football coach and scout - with a historical twist: “Balompié”.
